Family history

John Birkett (junior) was born in 1888 at Mansfield, he was the son of the late John Birkett (senior) and Mary Birkett née Cook of 10 Rock Street, Mansfield, his father John (senior) was born in 1853 he died in 1907 at Mansfield, he was 54 yrs his mother Mary Cook was born in 1853 at Mansfield, they were married in 1871 at Mansfield, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Rock Hill, Mansfield, his widowed mother Mary 58 yrs is living with her children, John 23 yrs a coal miner hewer, James 19 yrs a coal miner hewer, Ethel 17 yrs a tin box polisher and Hannah Birkett daughter in law 23 yrs of age.

John Birkett (junior) married Hannah Smith (born 28th October 1888) on 6th August 1910 at St Peters Church, Mansfield, Hannah brought a child to the marriage, Joseph Smith born 23rd November 1909, they went on to have 2 further children, Mary born 7th January 1913 and Harriett born 29th September 1915, they lived at 10 Rock Street, Mansfield.

Commencing 9th July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week.

Military history

Gunner John Birkett enlisted and served with the 5th trench mortar battery, Royal Field Artillery, he landed in France on 6th December 1915. He was killed in action on 20th December 1916, he is buried at St Vaast Post, Military Cemetery, Richebourg L’Avouef Cemetery, France.
