James was born in 1880 at Newcastle upon Tyne, he was baptised on 7th January 1880 at Christ Church, Newcastle upon Tyne, he was the son of the late Thomas Cleghorn an innkeeper and Hannah Cleghorn, née Watson of Newcastle-on-Tyne,

His father Thomas was born in 1848 at Rock, Northumberland, he died in 1916 at Littleborough aged 68 yrs his mother Hannah Watson was born in 1851 at Newcastle upon Tyne, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the South Shields registration district they had a further child a daughter Alice born 1879 at Newcastle.

In 1881 they lived at The Goat Inn 338 Westgate Road Newcastle upon Tyne. his father was the inn keeper.

Military history

James Cleghorn enlisted at Newcastle and served with the 2/5th battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He died at Oaklands Military Hospital and is buried in St Nicholas churchyard, Littleborough.
