Walter was born in Calverton in 1899 he was the the son of William a roadman/labourer and Hannah Binch née Rose, of Calverton

His father William was born in 1864 at Calverton, his mother Hannah Rose was born in 1868 at Calverton, they were married on 21st April 1889 at Wilfrid Church Calverton they had 8 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Foxwood Terrace, Calverton William 47 yrs is a roadman labourer, he is living with his wife Hannah 44 yrs and their children, Mary Hannah 21 yrs a factory hand, Audrey 19 ys a facory hand, Elsie Mary 16 yrs a factory hand, Walter 12 yrs a scholar, Maude Elizabeth 10 yrs a scholar and Edward Howard 8 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Walter Binch enlisted at Nottingham, he originally enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment (31355) but later transferred to the Highland Light Infantry he died of wounds on 17th April 1918 he was reported as missing on 9th April 1918.

He was buried in the Royal Irish Graveyard Laventie, Pas de Calais, France (grave ref. Laventie German M.C).

Extra information

CWGC record gives his date of death as 17 April 1918 although the commemoration on his parents' headstone in Calverton churchyard gives the date 9 April 1918 which is the date he was reported missing in action.
