James Daley was born in 1896 at Merthyr Tydvil, Glamorgan, he was the son of John a coal miner hewer and Ellen Daley nee Evans of 25 Bryn Street Twyrodyn Merthyr Tydvil,Glamorgan.

His father John was born in 1871 at Merthyr, his mother Ellen Evans was born in 1873 also at Merthyr they were married in 1893 at Merthyr Tydvil and went on to have 10 children.

In the 1901 census the family are living at Thomas Road , Merthyr Tydvil, John 30 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Ellen 28 yrs, and their 6 children,

It has not been possible to trace the family in the 1911 census.

Military history

Private James Daley enlisted at Merthyr Tydvil, Glamorgan, he served with 'B' Coy 11th battalion South Wales Borderers, he died of wounds on 16th April 1916 at the Bagthorpe Military Hospital, Nottingham. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery and is commemorated on the Scren Wall.
