John Vellum Stafford known as 'Jack' was born in 1897 he was the son of William a railway platelayer and Sarah Stafford née Gibson and the brother of Evelyn, Samuel Gibson and Sydney Charles Stafford of 'The Green' Radcliffe on Trent.

William and Sarah Gibson were both born in 1856 at Radcliffe on Trent, they were married on 22nd September 1879 at Christchurch, Newark, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In 1911 the family were living at the Green, Radcliffe on Trent, William 55 yrs is living with his wife Sarah 55 yrs and five of their children.

Military history

Private John Vellum Stafford Attested 10th October 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs he served on the home front until he embarked on 16th March 1916 landing the following day in France. On 19th March 1916 he arrived at the base depot and by 31st January 1916 he had joined his unit in the Field

On 12th December 1916 he suffered an accidental injury to his back caused by the fall of a dugout roof. on 24th December 1916 he was admitted to hospital with contusion to his back.
On 24th January 1917 he was Killed in action in the field and is buried at Foncqueviliers Military Cemetery IF15
