William Henry Swindell was the son of George Swindell and Mary Astill who married at Nottingham in 1879. Their children included: Robert (b.1880), Sarah Elizabeth (b.1882), George (b.1886), Leonard Thomas (b.1891), Bernard (b.1893), Harold (b.1896), William Henry (b.1899) and Wilfred Astill (b.1902). The Swindell family lived at: 6 Radcliffe Terrace, Nottingham [C.1881]; 47 Citadel Street, Radford [C.1891]; 10 Beresford Street, Old Radford [C.1901 & CWGC of brother, Bernard]. George Swindell, who worked as a carter, died at Nottingham, aged 62, in 1915. His wife, Mary, appears to have died in the Basford registration district, aged 72, in 1930.
He enlisted at Nottingham; initially in the 9th T.R. Bn. [Service No.35339]; killed in action; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.
Two older brothers were also killed in the war: Sergeant Bernard Swindell of 9th Bn. Sherwood Foresters died 27 April 1917; Driver Leonard Thomas Swindell of the 21st Division, Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery died 11 October 1917.
