Family history

Arthur Harison was baptised 14 March 1886, St Peter's Church, Old Radford. Address 32 Mill Street, Lenton. He was the son of Herbert a hosiery machine fitter and Selina Harrison née née Hopcroft his eldest brother Private Henry Albert (Harry) Harrison, 1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action 1/7/1916.

His father Herbert was born in 1857 at Nottingham, his mother Selina Hopcroft was born in 1863 at Nottingham, they were married in 1882 at Nottingham, they had 11 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Osborne Street, Radford, Herbert 53 yrs is a hosiery machine fitter, he is living with his wife Selina 47 yrs and their children, Henry Albert 19 yrs a tobacco manufacturer, Wllace 18 yrs a needle maker, Samuel Hartop 15 yrs a dropper maker, William 10 yrs a scholar and Hilda 8 yrs old.

Arthur married Mabel Curwood (born 24th June 1886 , they were married on 24th December 1907 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 2 children, Eunice Mary born 12th July 1908 and Arthur born 23rd August 1915.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 29 Allison Terrace, Standard Road, Sneiton Hill, Nottingham. Arthur 25 yrs is a hosiery warehouseman he is living with his wife Mabel 24 yrs and their daughter Eunice Mary 2 years old.

Commencing 3rd September 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Private Arthur Harrison enlisted on 9th December 1915 at Nottingham giving his age as 30 yrs and 177 days, his address was 21 Hall street, Nottingham he was a warehouseman he was station at Patrington Camp, near Hull (1916) he embarked from Devonport on 15th October 1916 and landed at Basra 22nd November 1916. Posted to the 2nd Bn Leicestershire Regiment n Mesopotamia. Reported missing, presumed killed. on 9th January 1917, he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

His brother Private Henry Albert Harrison enlisted at Nottingham he Initially served with the 3/7th Sherwood Foresters (regimental number 3793 then transferred 1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters D Coy, 15 Platoon). Stationed Belton Park, Grantham, before being posted to France. He had a leave pass issued for 22/23 October 1915 to enable him to marry his fiancée, Lucy, but all leave was stopped prior to posting to France and the wedding never took place. he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
