Family history

Samuel Wood was born in 1875 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Samuel Bower Wood a brick layers labourer and th late Sarah Ann Wood née Stones.of Rick Street, Nottingham.

Hs father Samuel Bower was born in 1839 at Pipe Street, Nottingham, he died in 1911 aged 72 yrs, his mother Sarah Ann Stones was born in 1844 at Hyson Green, Nottingham, she died in 1918 aged 74 yrs they were married on 31st January 1869 at St Marys Church, Nottingham, they had 8 children.

In the 1911 census he is living with his brother James Wood 34 yrs and a labourer, and his family , Samuel is 36 yrs of age, single and a general labourer, they are living at 62 Pieeepont Road, Sneinton, Nottingham

He was the husband of Elizabeth Wankling born 26th February 1876, thyey were married on 25th May 1896 at Nottingham,they lived at 3 Dunnetts Terrace, Sneinton, they had 3 children, William Arthur Henry born 10th September 1903, Harry born 25th May 1908 and Joseph born 22nd April 1909.

Commencing 19th March 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week.

He lived at 7 Kingston Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.

Military history

Private Samuel Wood was called up for service at Nottingham and following training he was drafted to France. On 2nd September 1916 the Welbeck Rangers moved into trenches due south of Beaumont Hamel during the continuing Battle of the Somme. The 670 officers and men attacked the following day and captured the German front line. The attack on the second line was held up by heavy machine gun fire, and finally the battalion was ordered to withdraw. There were 454 casualties including Wood who died of wounds on 6th September 1916, he was buried at Beauval Communal Cemetery.
