George Edward Wainwright was born in 1899 at Nottingham, he was the son of Charles William a lace warehouseman and Penelope Wainwright née Streets of 9 Port Arthur Road, Snenton.
His father Charles William Wainwright, born in 1869 at Long Eaton, Derbyshire, and working as a lace warehouseman. his mother Penelope Streets was, born in 1863 at Scawby, Lincolnshire. they were married on 7th May 1891 at St Ann's, Nottingham, they had 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or ealy childhood, his brother: Charles Gilbert, born in 1894 in Nottingham. his sisters Sarah Doris Mary Ada, born in 1904 in Nottingham and Alice Mabel, born in 1906 in Nottingham.
The family lived at 16 Preston Terrace, Nottingham before moving to 9 Port Arthur Road, Sneinton, Nottingham.In the 1911 census te family are living at 9 Port Arthur Road, Sneinton, Charles William 42 yrs is a lace warehouseman, he is living with his wife Penelope 48 yrs and their children, Charles Gilbert 17 yrs, a machine turner, George Edward 11 yrs, Sarah Doris Mary 7 yrs and Alice Mable 5 yrs of age.
Pte. George Edward Wainwright was called up for service at Nottingham, he served with the 5th battalion Yorkshire Regiment, following training he was drafted to France. The battalion was involved in fighting in the Chemin des Dames area after the German break through, and helped hold the line. Pte. Wainwright died on 12th June 1918 and was buried at Courmas British Cemetery.
