Joseph Francis Thompson (junior) was born in 1886 in Nottingham and worked as a lace curtain warehouseman he was the son of Joseph Francis Thompson (senior) and Elizabeth Sarah Thompson née White,

His father Joseph Francis (senior) was born in 1868 at Nottingham, his mother Elizabeth Sarah White was born in 1866 at Notingham, they were married on 8th May 1881 at St Ann's, Nottingham.

Joseph Francis Thompson (junior) married Charlotte Gertrude Smalley (born 19th October 1885) they were married in 1906 at Nottingham, They had four daughters; Elsie Elizabeth, born 16th April 1909,and Gladys Clare, born 11th January 1911 and Beatrice Irene born 8th February 1914 and Doris Winifred born 8th February 1914. all were born in Nottinghamalso in Nottingham.

The family lived at 28 Port Arthur Road, Sneinton, Nottingham.

Commencing 8th January 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 23 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Corporal . Thompson volunteered for service in Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and following training he was drafted to France on 28th February 1915, On 25th June 1916 250 men from the battalion were positioned in No Man's Land opposite the village of Gommecourt, digging a new trench in preparation for the attack on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. It was about 140 yards in advance of the front line and once the Germans saw what was happening they shelled the men heavily and there were many casualties including Cpl. Thompson. He is buried at Foncquevillers Cemetery, France
