Family history

Henry Medcalf was born in 1896 at Wainfleet, Lincolnshire he was the son of Charles Medcalf, a farm labourer and Jessie Jane Medcalf néé Wilkinson of 16 New Market Yard, Sneinton.

His father Charles was born in 1867 Partney, Lincolnshire, working as a domestic groom and later as a farm labourer, his mother Jessie Jane Wilkinson, born in 1869 at Scremby, Lincolnshire they were married in 1891 at Spilsby, they had 7 children, .Brothers: Charles W. born in 1892 at Scremby,Alfred, born in 1897 at Wainfleet and John George, born in 1906 at Hundleby, Lincolnshire. Sisters: Marhitabe(!) born in 1896 at Wainfleet, working as a domestic servant, Roslie, born in 1896 at Wainfleet and Ethel, born in 1899 at Wainfleet.

The family left Hundleby and moved to West Street, Alford before leaving for 16 New Market Yard, Sneinton, Nottingham

In the 1911 census Henry Medcalf is a boarder he is boarding at Hungleby, Spilsby, Lincolnshire, he is 18 yrs and a farm labourer he is boarding with George Hutson 54 yrs a cottage farmer and his family.

Military history

Private Henry Medcalf enlisted at Lincoln, he served with the 4th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, The battalion moved to the Ypres Salient in November 1914, and it was not long before Medcalf was seriously wounded. He died on 22nd November 1914 and was buried at Chocques Military Cemetery.
