Francis McDermott was born in 1899 he was the son of Patrick a general labourer and Alice McDermott née Branmen and they lived at 9 Brougham Street, Sneinton Nottingham.
His father Patrick was born in 1855 at Nottingham, his mother Alice Branmen was born in 1857 at Nottingham, they were married in 1876 at Nottingham.
In the 1901 census the family are living at 16 Smiths Yard St Ann's,Nottingham. the family Patrick McDermott 26 yrs is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Alice 24 yrs a lace dresser and son Janus 2 yrs of age. are boarding at the address with Peter Gatley 61 yrs a hawker and his family.
Private Francis McDermott was called up for service at Nottingham and following training he was drafted to France. He served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment the battalion took part in fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres, when McDermott was killed in action on 9th April 1917 his body was not recovered but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial At Ypres.
In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 9th April 19120 :-
“MCDERMOTT. – In loving memory of Pte. Francis McDermott, aged 18, killed in action April 9th, 1917, at Hill 60, Ypres. Upright and just in all his ways, honest and faithful to the end of his days; forgotten to the world by some he may be, but dear to our memory he will ever be. – From mother, sisters, and brothers.”
