Samuel Lane was born on 16th March 1885 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late William Lane and Sarah Ann Lane née Wilson
His father, William Lane, was born in 1863 at Nottingham, he died in 1901 aged 38 yrs, he was working as a Corporation labourer. His mother Sarah Ann Wilson was born in 1866 in Nottingham they were married in 1892 at Nottingham, his brothers:William, born in 1883 in Nottingham and working as a coal miner, and John, born in 1887.
The family lived at 17, Tyler Street, Nottingham before moving to 3 Coldham Street, Sneinton, Nottingham..
Samuel Lane was married on 20th April 1908, at St Pauls Church, Nottingham, to Eliza McNulty and lived with his wife and two children at 1 South Street, Nottingham his children were Ellen born 5th September 1908 and Thomas born 11th July 1912.
His pension record shows his two children Ellen born 5th September 1908 and Thomas born 11th July 1912, their guardian was Mrs Sarah Ann Lane (his mother) 1 South Street, West Street, Sneinton Road, Nottingham was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week (mothers rate) commencing 26th March 1917. the record is marked 'Unworthy wife'
Private Samuel Lane enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he moved with his battalion to the Somme and was caught up in the fighting for the fortified German position known as the Quadrilateral, east of the village of Ginchy. He was seriously wounded during the attack, and was taken down the line to hospital at Etaples. He died there on 17th September 1916 and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
