Family history

John Haines was born in 1888 at Enville, Staffordshire, he was the son of Thomas Haines a cattleman on a farm and Eliza Haines néé Scrivens, he was the brother of Mrs. Florence Marian Gardiner (née Haines) 13 Rutland Road, Meadows, Nottingham.

His father Thomas was born in 1839 at Welford, Gloucester, his mother Eliza Scrivens was born in 1867 at Bobbington, Staffordshire, married in 188 at St Marys Church, Enville, Stffordshire they went on to have 7 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood.

Military history

Pte. Haines enlisted at Wolverhampton whilst residing at Tenby, Worcester, he served with the 2nd battalion South Staffordshire Regiment he was in barracks at Aldershot when war broke out. The battalion embarked from Southampton and arrived at Le Havre on 13th August 1914. The battalion took part in the Great Retreat, marching some 236 miles before turning at the Marne. The battalion advanced to the Aisne and dug in. They were later moved to the Ypres Salient and held the line despite heavy German attacks. He was killed in action on 28th October 1914. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
