Family history

George Cyril Allen was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of John Allen a coal miner and his first wife Mary Allen née Lowe,

His father John Allen, born 1853 in Carlton, Notts. Worked as a coal miner. his mother: Mary Lowe was born in 1861 at Ilkeston, she died in 1902 aged 41 yrs, his father later married Elizabeth Cook born 1861 at Pinxton, the were married 1910 at Nottingham.

Brothers: Arthur K., born 1882, working as a hosiery frame fitter and John, born November 1900. Sister: Lydia Ann, born in 1889. All the children were born in Nottingham.

The family lived at 16 Mabel Street, Nottingham, before moving to 93 Moreland Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 93 Moreland Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham, John 58 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his second wife Elizabeth 50 yrs a grocer, ahd his children, Lydia Ann 22 yrs a hosiery maker, George Cyril 18 yrs a lace warehouse clerk and John 10 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private George Cyril Allen attested on 12th December 1915, giving his age as 23 yrs and 5 months he was posted to the reserves, he was mobilised on 25th March 1916 and embarked for France on 20th July 1916, he was posted to the 2nd Bn Lincolnshire Regt. on 29th July 1916.

He was wounded a gunshot wound to head on 23rd October 1916 in an attack on Zenith Trench, near Les Boeufs, during the continuing Battle of the Somme. Taken to 24th Field Ambulance, but died 24th October 1916. His grave lost but name commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
