Arthur Ernest Good was born on 27th June 1873 at Nottingham, he was the son of Frederick William a lace manufacturer and Mary Good née Tatham.

His father Frederick William was born in 1845 in Surrey, his mother Mary Tatham was born in 1846 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1868 at Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children.

Arthur Ernest married Sarah Brownley on 11th August 1895 at St Pauls Church, Nottingham at the time of their marriage they were lining at 5 Colwick Street, Nottingham. They went on to have a daughter Jessie Winifred Good born 20th May 1894 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census he is listed at the Submarine Depot at Portsmouth, he is shown Arthur Ernest Good 37 yrs married, chief engine room artificer 2nd class.
In the same 1911 census his wife and daughter are living at 8 Bunleigh Road, Portsmouth, Sarah Good 37 yrs is living with her daughter Jesse Winifred 14 yrs.

His probate was proven on 26th March 1912 at Nottingham, shows Arthur Ernest Good of Woodthorpe Drive, Mapperley, chief engineer artificer Royal Navy, died 2nd February 1912 at sea. His effects of £315,15 shillings and 10 pence were left to his widow Sarah Good.

Military history

Submarine A3 was built at Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness and was commissioned on 13 July 1904. She was accidentally rammed while surfacing by the submarine tender Hazard in the English Channel off the Isle of Wight on 2 February 1912 and sank with the loss of all on board. The wreck was salvaged and subsequently sunk as a gunnery target in the English Channel near Portland Bill on 12 May 1912, where she remains today. In July 2016 the wreck of A3 was officially designated as a protected site. (Wikipedia)

Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 2/2/1916:

‘Good. In fond memory of Arthur Ernest Good, Chief Engine Room Artificer, who died at his post on HM Submarine A3 February 2nd 1912. – One of the very best. wife and daughter.’

Good was not a Great War fatality. His family presumably argued for inclusion on the St Faith's memorial because his life was lost in military service. David Nunn
