Family history

Arthur James Mee (junior) was born in 1898 at Nottingham he was the son of Arthur James Mee(senior) a baker and Sarah Mee née Smith and the brother of Hilda Helen, Roger William and Vernon Charles Mee.

His father Arthur James (senior) was born in 1862 at Ruddington, his mother Sarah Smith was born in 1870 at Ross, Herefordshire, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham, they went on to have 4 children.

In 1901 the family lived at 41 Marcus Street Lenton Nottingham and in 1911 at 4 Carnarvon Street Woodborough Road Nottingham.

In the 1911 census Arhtur James 9senior) is 49 yrs of age and is a baker, he is living with his wife Sarah 4 yrs and their children, Hilda 20 yrs a hosiery machinist, Roger William 19 yrs a baker, Arthur James 12 yrs a scholar and Vernon Charles 1 year of age.

Military history

Private Arthur James Mee enlisted on 9 May 1916 at Nottingham, giving his age as 17 yrs and 259 days, his address was 4Canarvon Street, Nottingha, his occupation was that of a shorthand typist, he was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 3rd February 1917. He was discharged on 20 March 1917, 'no longer physically fit for war service'. His army service record notes 'his conduct has been good whilst in hospital where he has spent all his service except 4 days.'

He was suffering from mitral regurgitation. Mitral insufficiency (MI), mitral regurgitation or mitral incompetence is a disorder of the heart in which the mitral valve does not close properly when the heart pumps out blood. Today the condition can be treated with surgery which is usually successful.

James died at home on 22 July 1917 and was buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery (St Paul's 9638). Although he died four months after he was medically discharged from the Army he was commemorated on Nottingham St Andrew's war memorial and is also recorded on the CWGC 'Debt of Honour'.
