Family history

James Gascoyne was born in 1890 the son of Herbert a coal miner and Catherine Gascoyne née Smith his siblings surviving infancy were William, Edith, Herbert, Kate, Linda, Albert, Jane and Vera Gascoyne.

His father Herbert was born in 1863 at Somercotes, his mother Catherine Smith was born in 1868 also at Somercotes, they were married on 5th November 1887 at Belper, they went on to have 12 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 38 Coupland Place Somercotes, Herbert 48 yrs is a coal miner stallman, he is living with hs wife Catherine 43 yrs and their 10 children including James 21 yrs a coal miner.

James married Sarah Ann Scothern (born 28th August 1891) on 30th May 1914 at St Pauls Church, Nottingham, they lived at 33 Virginia Street Colwick Street Nottingham they had a son James born 2nd June 1915.

Commencing 17th December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings a week.

Military history

Corporal James Gascoyne enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Alfreton, he served with the 9th battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He first entered theatre of war (France) on 26th August 1915. He was wounded and returned to England where he died at King George's Hospital in London. He was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery Screen Wall: 03355
