Inscription reads: '‘In loving memory of Christopher Chowler Gilbert youngest son of Edward and Emily Gilbert aged 32 years. Lieut. Duke of Wellington’s Regiment. Was wounded in Dardanelles Nov. 1915, had command of his company in the Battle of the Somme. Fell while leading his men into action Sept. 29th 1816. His body rests in a soldier’s grave in France. ‘Till he come’ Lieutenant Gilbert is also commemorated on the memorial and Roll of Honour in Newark St Mary and the memorial in Newark Cemetery.
