St Nicholas Church Maid Marian Way Nottingham - Thornton Memorial

A petition dated 4 August 1920 to erect a brass plaque in St Nicholas' church is held in Nottinghamshire Archives (ref PR 19,115/3). The document includes a record of the inscription on the memorial, 'In memory of Pascoe Spencer Thornton of Tientsin, North China, who died at Tsingtao on [-] April 1917 while engaged on behalf of HM Government in the organisation of a Chinese Labour Corps for France. Buried at Tsingtao. Also of Lieut Col Godfrey St Leger Thornton DSO RFA who after serving for 10 years in India went out to France with the Expeditionary Force in August 1914 transferred to the Dardanelles, was wounded and Mentioned in Dispatches. He again left for France in June 1916 and in October 1917 he was invalided home and died at Ramsdale Park 4th February 1918. Buried in the Nottingham Church Cemetery. Sons of Henry Edward and Katherine Charlotte Thornton of Nottingham'. Memorial researched by Rachel Farrand
