Cropwell Bishop - St Giles

St Giles, Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, NG12 3BU. The memorial window is the only coloured glass in the church apart from a fragment of medieval glass. A three light stained glass window with an angel in the centre light holding a crown ('A crown of life') flanked in the left and right hand lights by St Nicholas, holding a ship, and St George. Below the angel is a soldier in contemporary uniform tending a comrade. The inscription below the image of St Nicholas reads, ' To the Glory of God and in memory of all Sailors.' The inscription at the bottom of the centre light reads, 'Let those who come after see to it that their names be not forgotten.' The inscription below the image of St George reads, 'To the Glory of God and in memory of all Soldiers.' A brass plaque gives the names of those who died together with their unit and the date of death. The parishioners paid for a war memorial hall on Nottingham Road, which was opened in 1932 by the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII. There is a record that there was at one time a roll of honour in the hall (photograph: www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NTT/CropwellBishop)
