Willoughby on the Wolds - St Mary and All Saints

St Mary and All Saints, Willoughby on the Wolds, LE12 6SS. There are two memorials in the church, the marble tablet on the north wall of the nave (WMA 27322), and a brass plaque on the tower wall which commemorates the men who served and in whose honour the clock on the church tower was installed (WMA27324). A faculty was approved for the marble tablet (WMA 27322) on 4 June 1919. The dedication reads, 'In proud and grateful remembrance of (names). Heroes of this parish. Gloriously, in self-sacrificing love and patriotic loyalty, were their lives laid down in the Great War 1914-1918. Their name liveth for evermore. This tablet was erected by members of the congregation and friends 1919.' The dedication on the brass plaque (WMA27324) reads: 'The clock in this tower was erected by the parishioners in grateful remembrance of those men who left this village to serve their country in the Great War 1914-1918.' The names of five men who died are listed separately and are marked with a cross. There is also a Roll of Honour in the church. A faculty for a rood screen, the gift of a parishioner as a thanks offering for peace, was also approved on 4 June 1919. (Nottinghamshire Archives, faculties ref PR 15.914/4).
