Employees of the National Provincial and Union Bank of England

This memorial to the employees of the National Provincial and Union Bank of England, formerly in the branch on Thurland Street, Nottingham, is in the banking hall of what is now the Smiths Bank Branch of the National Westminster Bank plc, 16 South Parade, Nottingham NG1 2JX. The inscription reads: 'A tribute to the 2681 members of the staff of this Bank who served in the Great War 1914-1918 and in honoured memory of the 415 who gave their lives for their country.' There are no names on the memorial and copies were probably placed in branches across the country.

Underneath the Great War memorial is another NP&UBE memorial (53899) which commemorates a member of the staff of the Nottingham branch, Willis Widdowson, who died in the Second World War.

A tablet outside the bank by the public entrance records the history of Smiths Bank: 'Nottingham Smiths Bank Branch. The Oldest Provincial Bank in England.' In 1638 Thomas Smith (1631-1699) completed the purchase for £210 of premises near to this site where he commenced trade as a Mercer and where the family banking business developed shortly thereafter.

Abel Smith II (1717-1788) founded further Smiths Banks in London 1758, Lincoln 1775 and Hull 1784. A bank at Derby was established in 1806. These Smiths family banks were organised as partnerships until 1902 when they were amalgamated with the Union Bank of London. Subsequent mergers with the National Provincial Bank of England in 1918 and the Westminster Bank in 1968 created the present National Westminster Bank PLC. Smiths family motto – 'Fidelity, with industry and with honour'.
