Screveton Air Crash - World War Two
At 16.30 hours on Friday April 14th 1944, there occurred above the village of Screveton a mid-air collision between an Oxford trainer (LB415) and a Lancaster bomber (W4103 RC-E). According to David Needham, the crew of the Oxford, flying north east-south west were carrying out 'beam approach training' whilst that of the Lancaster, flying west-east, were carrying out 'circuits and bumps' training (take off and landing). There were no survivors from either aircraft.
For an excellent full account of this accident, see David Needham, Nottinghamshire Air Crashes, (Ashbourne: Landmark Publishing, 2008, p.p.69-74)
