The Nottinghamshire Golf course - World War 2

To the memory of the 12 Squadron crew of a Wellington MK11 - W5365 which struck the Oak tree on the first fairway at 12.30 hrs on Saturday 8th February 1941.

B flight of 12 squadron Royal Air Force were on detachment to Tollerton airfield while converting to the Vickers Wellington on the 8th February two bombers left the base on a sortie familarise all the crew with using both front and rear gun turrets.W5365 returned first and on approach to the airfield the aircraft dived to the ground twice each time the pilot regained control but the aircraft had lost a great deal of height and on passing through some trees it struck the oak tree, the wings were torn off and the fuselage split in half. Farm workers quicly arrived and with disregard for their own safetytook little notice of the fumesfrom the fuel tanks. Now laying in the opennd helped the crewas best they could.
