Blyth Air Crash Memorial - World War Two
Near the centre of Blytth stands a small stone obelisk commemorating twelve airmen who died during World War Two - eleven in crashes close to the village and Sergeant TC Clitheroe who survived the accident near Blyth but who lost his life over France six months later flying with 12 Sqdn en route to bomb Stuttgart.
Four men died on March 7th 1944 aboard Wellington HE 818 (Clitheroe survived). Wellington HE818 from 18 OTU at RAF Worksop crashed approximately 200m from the site of the memorial.
Seven were lost August 2nd 1944. Halifax III NA581 was operating on a daytime test flight with the RCAF 425 (Alouetté) Squadron out of RAF Tolthorpe, North Yorkshire, when it suffered engine problems and crashed.
